Heffron Precision Offers New Service to Colt Double Action Revolver Owners

By Joe W Gorman

Removing a few parts from my brand new Colt Kodiak so that I can have Heffron Precision smooth up the action. What a great new service!

I have two 2020 Colt Pythons (previously reviewed) which have been tuned by Heffron Precision. It’s no secret I’m a big fan of Colt’s wheel guns and Heffron’s work on them!

My Pythons, after being worked over by Heffron, are mechanical wonders, capable of incredible accuracy and featuring smooth actions that make all other revolvers jealous. But I am not the only one who loves Heffron’s work. In fact, the current wait time for a revolver to be worked on by Heffron Precision is 4+ years out! (I mentioned that Colt’s own Custom Shop recommended him right?)

A beautiful new Colt Python with an XS Python tritium front sight and a boxes of Hornady ammunition.

However, Michael Heffron has found a way to get Colt Double Action owners an action job in about 2 weeks and it’s even cheaper than before!

Read on.

Michael Heffron says if you can remove the hammer, trigger, rebound lever, hand, transfer bar, and mainspring from your new Colt, you can arrange to get a work order number from his shop and send the parts in! Turnaround time is more like 2 weeks!

The author sent parts from two new Colts into Heffron. On top, a Colt 2.5” blued Python. The Python is dressed for business with a Tyler T Grip adapter. On the bottom, a Colt 4”  stainless Kodiak. The Kodiak is wearing a beautiful one-piece Pau Ferro striped grip from Hogue! The Kodiak really tames the recoil of potent .44 Magnums.

I’ll let Michael Heffron explain, “We have designed and made dedicated fixtures for every part that we alter.  Alterations are performed in the fixture using a milling machine.  We are able to maintain a tolerance of + – .0001″.  After necessary milling is complete, we finish hone and polish the contact areas, then the parts are checked in a Colt revolver frame for function.

For a stainless Python it’s $245, for a blued Python it’s $265.  The end result equals our Master Series Tune, which was $375.  Our price even includes return shipping within the Continental 48 U.S.  We are even getting customers from Europe!  I’m sending Python parts today to a customer in the Netherlands.

At 12-yards, fired single action, the mighty Heffron-tuned Kodiak is powerful and precise!

When parts have been to Heffron, they come back with tattoos so you know where they’ve been. Sorta like Sailors and Marines. See the HP circled in red?

While the parts are here, we like to check the mainspring to make sure it meets specifications and we polish 2 areas of it.  We have been using a new polishing method for a while now that gets the part extremely smooth, yet allows it to hold lubrication.  It works very well.  It allows for smoother operation and even longer life.

9-yards, double action, the Heffron-tuned snub-nosed Python delivers the goods! BTW, a quick check of the standard distribution of citizen-involved-shootings shows that 9-yards is waaaaay longer than a typical encounter!

There are so many people who have purchased one of the New Series Colt double-action revolvers.  After purchase, many call us to really slick them up.  With our backlog being what it is, (51 months) they would have a long wait.  Heffron Precision felt this service was a “must have” for the market.  You email us with your information and what you want, we write up an order, we email them all of their order information, then they can send their parts in immediately.  We typically get them turned around and shipped out within a 2 week timeframe.  For those who love the precision of the Colts but want relief from the overbearing trigger as soon as possible, this fits the bill perfectly.

Currently, prices for the Component Part Master Tune© are: Cobra & King Cobra family guns: $200.  Python frame guns: $245 stainless $265 blue.  Anaconda frame guns: $255.  If you wish to have the Python trigger machined with our Comfort Contour© that’s an additional $65 stainless and $125 blued.  Overall advantages are a crisp and light trigger single-action trigger (under 3 lbs on Cobra/King Cobra frame, 2.5 – 2.75 lbs for Python and Anaconda frame), slicker and lighter double-action (under 9 or under on 357 Mag., 8.75 or under on 38 Special,  9.25 or under on 22 LR on Cobra/King Cobra frame, 8.50 – 8.75 lbs on Python and Anaconda frames), slicker trigger return, a smoother action with a gliding feel will be the end result.”  Well said Michael!

The author frequently wanders out at dusk, on the lonesome Iowa prairie, and shoots 296-brewed .357 Magnum loads from a snubnosed Python. No one knows why.

After arranging an order with Heffron and sending my parts in, I was amazed at the quick turn around. But more importantly, I was truly impressed with the smoothness of the actions on my new Colts.

Precision shooting with a 2.5 pound single action trigger feels like cheating. Don’t underestimate what a revolver with a smooth action is capable of!

The last piece of the puzzle for my new EDC Python was action work. Heffron Precision did an incredible job. What an old-school Roscoe!
