Us wheel-gunners long dreamt of the day when Colt would once again produce the magnificent Colt Python. Then 2020 hit us like a bag of concrete. Between the pain spikes there were some bright points. For one thing, Colt made the Python again. The 2020 Python was originally released in stainless only. A few of years later, Colt gave us a blue Python again. And yes, of course, I had to have one.
I managed to get my hands on a beautiful new 6” blue Colt Python .357 magnum. This masterpiece had a nice double action out the box, but as you may have guessed, I’ve already scheduled a tune up at Heffron Precision to get the action of my 6” blue Python to be as nice as my 3” stainless Python. The Heffron magic has spoiled me.
I did want to update a few things that I have found makes a great Python even greater! I wanted a tritium front sight, a heavy-duty chromoly steel rear sight and some old school black walnut Colt medallion grips.
XS Sights tritium front sight with the green glow dot. You can’t miss it!
For the tritium front sight, I used XS Sights’ new green tritium front sight. The XS sight features a standard tritium dot surrounded with a photoluminescent glow dot for a “there is no way in hell you will lose visibility of this sight as you are drawing on target” sight picture. This combination provides tremendous luminosity in both bright and low light. Installation of this sight was extremely easy and quick. XS even included a small bottle of thread lock and an appropriately sized hex wrench with the sight!
That XS Sights glow dot really does glow in bright light. It really draws your eye.

This article is understandably focused on a spectacular revolver and the accessories that can be added to it. However XS Sights offers products for many more platforms. A brief glance through our other articles will show XS Sights on several lever gun builds and other pistols.
The XS Sights Tritium front sight designed for Mossburg 500 series shotguns
So when I was contemplating a upgrading the sights on my Mossburg 590 Retrograde I turned to XS sights for the solution. The standard 590 Retrograde comes with a traditional brass bead front sight and no rear sight, a perfectly fine configuration for a bird gun, but somewhat lacking for a stone cold tactical pump gun. Luckily XS came through with exactly what I needed to complete the look and add that last bit of functionality to the 590.
The large Ghost ring rear sight allows for quick target acquisition and plenty of target picture even in low light
XS sights sent me the Ghost Ring & Banded Tritium Dot Shotgun set, this kit features a green tritium front sight with a white band, surrounded by a very classic set of protective wings the rear sight is a combat type ghost ring that is large enough for quick acquisition but precise enough that I was easily ringing steel off hand at 75 yards.
But enough about my awesome shotgun, back to the Colt.

Wilson Combat’s adjustable square notch Battlesight is the best rear sight available for the new Pythons. This sight will stay put through thousands of heavy magnum rounds and offers a crisp sight picture. Made with high-grade chromoly steel, the Wilson Battlesight is fully adjustable for windage, and elevation, and its precision machining looks great on the top strap. These adjustments are very positive and provide a reassuring “click.”
That Wilson Combat Battlesight sure provides a crisp sight picture as well as rock solid adjustment.
Deer Hollow Grips makes meticulously accurate reproductions of Colt grips. They offer a 3rd Generation Colt Python grip, made from American black walnut that are accurate to the Python grips of the mid-late 1970s down to the grip screw. Deer Hollow has painstakingly crafted these Colt reproductions to perfection. I had these grips on my 4” stainless Python and they certainly dress up the 6” blue Python!
What a good-looking revolver! Who says they don’t make them like they used to? The Deer Hollow early 3rd Generation Grips look smashing and provide a secure grip when the loads get heavy.
